Saying Goodbye

Thursday, May 31st, 2007

So I’m 23 now, soon to be 24, and it’s still not easy to say goodbye to friend. I think I have gotten used to the feeling of saying goodbye and I think there are many various reasons for that. The more you do something, the more you become numb to it. Just like anything in life.

But on the other hand I don’t think Florida is as far away as it used to be like when I was in High School. I can hop on a plane and be just about anywhere in the US in a few hours, except Hawaii and most of the West Coast, still that is not too awful far away. Maybe this is growing up, maybe this is just life, but as I get older it seems the more people disburse around the world, or country, or state.

One of my best friends, gym buddy, fellow geek, and all around good guy moved to Florida for work and I’m going to miss him, aw. Our one friend was sad that he was going and said that he shouldn’t go, but I feel whatever is best for him makes me happy. I will miss him, but he is pursuing his dreams and that is the most important part. He said he is coming back to the area and that would be great.

friends

I guess friends really don’t say goodbye, maybe just see you later.

Night.

Diary of a Tech

Thursday, May 24th, 2007

I pretty well struggle to think about things to write for various reasons. Things like I’m too busy, oh that’s been written before, nobody will read, etc etc. Well I do want to write more and just for the sake of writing because it can be a fun thing to do. I think this summer one of my goals is to become a person that writes things on a reoccurring basis. I’m not saying daily or anything but maybe start with one time a week and go from there. My inspiration is Freelance Switch – Creating a morning ritual this is a good read and some things that I’m going to try!

I digress, I love working in the IT field. I love problem solving, swapping out hardware, upgrading various things, but one thing that I do not like is trying to solve the end-user. This is a tip for all people: techs to end-users to post office workers, whatever. You can never give too much information. I will bold that because that is the key to making Technology people happy and making your life much easier.

Let me pose a scenario. Freaking sweet eh?

When somebody says the computer made a beep and ends it there. What can you do? You have to stand there for the next 10 minutes and extract the information. I think extract is the nice word, pulling teeth is probably a better analogy.

// SCENARIO

IT responds, “Oh yeah? What were you doing when the computer beep?”

NON-IT responds, “Working.”

IT responds, “What were you working on? Word? Outlook?”

NON-IT responds, “I don’t know, but it was beeping and I thought you should know.”

IT responds, “Well okay thanks! Have a good day”

//END SCENARIO

I think is probably a deeper problem. The user doesn’t really understand computers. Wait. This is an even deeper problem. The user does not understand what they doing. Okay, I could end there but I think this might help everybody if you have a problem, write it down.

What to write down:

Time and Place
Type of problem
Running applications
Current application

This is just a dream I know the end-user will not write down anything, but a man can dream.
