They didn't actually prove that co-rumination causes depression and anxiety; they only proved that they are correlated. Maybe the girls had high depression and anxiety that caused them to have high levels of co-rumination. Or maybe there is some other factor that causes high levels of co-rumination, anxiety, and depression that wasn't assessed in the survey. Or, the person who wrote the article could have just butchered the original scientific one and made it sound like they only proved correlation and not causation. Journalists like to butcher scientific works. Love you! :-P This study is rather deceptive.
